Who could say no to the scandalous story of Messalina, one of the most controversial women to have inhabited the Roman world?

Right from the intro, I could tell this book was going to be a fascinating journey through ancient history with a feminist twist - and I was absolutely hooked.

This book reads like an academic version of The Tudors series. Full of drama, court intrigue, and lots of corruption. What more could you want?

The writing style was the perfect balance between being easy to read and informative, with just the right amount of personality to keep things lively.

However, I found myself slightly frustrated at times. While we get a glimpse into Messalina's world, the focus often shifts to the people around her, leaving me wanting more of Messalina herself.

I couldn't help but wish for more insight from the author throughout the book too. Perhaps it was too subtle, but I longed for her perspective to shine through a bit more.

Honestly, while I wanted a bit more oomph, as far as a non-fiction historical fiction book goes, it’s one of the best I’ve ever read.

As soon as I saw the box photo for this book nook, I knew I was going to enjoy putting these teeny tiny books together.

Aren’t they so cute?! I know this is a greenhouse kit, but I could have filled this bookcase with more of these little guys.

Do you think I should get myself one of the book-themed book nooks to itch that scratch?

Would you like to put together one of these?

I was given this build-your-own-book nook kit from a friend for Christmas, and I’ve been saving it for when I had the time to film the process.

Because, guys, this took 5 hours to put together! It was fiddly and delicate, but a lot of fun.

I got through a nice chunk of The Burning God by R.F. Kuang while doing it, which is always a bonus. It makes for a great audiobook activity.

I may have broken a few pieces while putting it together, and I absolutely missed a few steps, but I think it turned out pretty good!

I’ll be posting a couple more reels soon with a closer look at the finished nook, so keep your eyes peeled 👀.

Little free libraries are just such a joy to see. Even better when you stumble across them. The one in the red phonebox was particularly cute.

Although I didn’t take home any books, I did very much enjoy visiting all of these.
