I don’t know if you’ve ever been through this - wondering why it was so easy to be creative when you were younger, and how it’s so much harder to do it now?

I don’t think we lose the magic, like we’ve come home from Neverland. I just think we’re not allowing it to happen because we’re filling our brains with other stuff.

Yes, okay, some of those things are necessary, like responsibilities and world events. But there are others that are entirely self-inflicted. Like doom scrolling, checking emails constantly, or giving in to that urge to check your phone while you have even a second of nothing to do.

I, for one, will try and be a bit more intentional. To not check my phone to ‘unwind’ after a long day (it doesn’t work anyway), and instead just sit, and allow my brain to rest and check back into its creativity.

I had high expectations for The Hymn to Dionysus, but it still surprised me. Rather than a straight retelling (pun intended heh), it’s more of a mythology-inspired story, blending ancient Greece with unexpected mechanical elements.

The characters are what really made the book for me. Phaidros, a soldier dealing with PTSD after years of war, is such a well-drawn, complex character. He struggles to adjust to life after battle - especially in a society that values control and discipline. Then there’s Dionysus, the complete opposite: chaotic, otherworldly, and untamed. Their dynamic was fascinating to watch unfold, shifting from wary tension to something much more meaningful.

Pulley’s writing is fantastic. Though the book is on the slower side, it lingers on moments, giving the characters and world time to breathe, which makes the emotional parts feel earned.

This is definitely one that’s going to stick with me.
